Groovy is an object-oriented language designed for the Java platform. It is a dynamic language with syntax concepts similar to Python, Ruby, Perl, and Smalltalk. Primarily used as a scripting language within the Java ecosystem, Groovy benefits from seamless interoperability with Java libraries and codebases.

Groovy syntax resembles Java in its use of brackets and overall structure. It compiles dynamically into JVM bytecode, enabling efficient execution while maintaining compatibility with existing Java applications. Most Java code can be directly used or adapted in Groovy without modification.

The development of Groovy was first announced by James Strachan in his blog in August 2003. The language underwent multiple releases between 2004 and 2006, culminating in the official 1.0 release on January 2, 2007. Subsequent updates included betas and release candidates leading up to Groovy 1.1 Final in December 2007, which was shortly thereafter rebranded as Groovy 1.5 to reflect significant enhancements.

Groovy introduces several features absent in Java, including optional static and dynamic typing via the def keyword, closures, operator overloading, built-in support for lists and maps (associative arrays), regular expressions, polymorphic iteration, embedded string expressions, auxiliary helper methods, and the safe navigation operator ?. that simplifies null checks (e.g., variable?.method(), variable?.field).
